Van's Story
On August 2, 2013 I scheduled an appointment with my primary care doctor due to symptoms of headaches and tremors in my right leg. She scheduled a CAT scan immediately following the appointment. The CAT scan revealed a golf ball size tumor. I was instructed to call a friend or family member to take me directly to the emergency room. While waiting on the arrival of my friend, I lost the use of my right arm and leg. My friend picked me up and took me to Duke University Medical Center where I underwent a series of medical exams. I was admitted and scheduled for surgery on August 5th. I remained in the hospital for one week before being transferred to Duke Regional Hospital's residential rehabilitation wing where I remained for one week. My hospital and rehabilitation stay was followed by three months of radiation treatment and therapy (occupational and physical). On August 14, 2014 I received a call from a physician at Duke informing of a diagnosis of Anaplastic Meningioma, Grade III. I was devastated! I cried... and I cried. Then I decided instead of focusing on death, I want to focus on living. I am committed to enjoying life, friends and family. I believe it is important to support cancer research which is why I am hosting the Charity Card Tournament for Brain Tumor Research.
