Welcome to the new year. We at NBTS are incredibly excited about all the opportunity we see ahead, yet there are already so many needs. In our own community, funding is needed to keep up the momentum of the latest discoveries in brain tumor research and to offer the services to help those who need information and support today. And now we watch the plight of those in Haiti and are moved, yet again, by human suffering when the unexpected occurs. We are reminded of the power of hope and determination and are honored to be part of the community we serve. |

NBTS Joins Forces with Leading Cancer Groups
Increasing resources for the challenges faced by brain tumor researchers promises to accelerate achievements. In addition to our direct funding, collaborations have long been part of NBTS' efforts and three exciting, recent collaborations are listed here:
BTFC Announces 11 New Grants
The Brain Tumor Funders' Collaborative (BTFC) announced 11 one-year, $100,000 feasibility grants for teams developing the tools to accelerate the testing of different kinds of brain tumor response markers - reliable, easily monitored biological signals that can reveal if and how a tumor is responding to therapies.
BTFC is a partnership among eight private philanthropic and advocacy organizations.
NBTS - AACR Fellowship
Rebecca A. Ihrie, PhD, of UCSF ("Developing a Novel Model of Pediatric Glioblastoma") and Fengting Yan, MD, PhD, of OSU ("Targeting protein arginine methyltransferase 5 in glioblastoma multiforme") received the NBTS-American Association for Cancer (AACR) Research Fellowship, in memory of Bonnie Brooks, supporting cancer researchers at various stages in their career.
AACR is the oldest and largest scientific organization in the world and scientific partner for network campaign, Stand Up to Cancer.
NBTS - AANS Translational Research Grant
Ichiro Nakano, MD, PhD of OSU was awarded the NBTS-American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Translational Research Grant. The award focused on lab research that would translate quickly to a clinical trial.
AANS "speaks for all of neurosurgery" and provides a unique perspective in bridging the worlds of clinician and lab scientists.

Living with a Brain Tumor -- A Patient and Family Conference in Washington, DC
Join NBTS March 19-20, 2010 for an exciting conference created for patients, survivors, and their families. The day will feature presentations from multidisciplinary health professionals on topics ranging from tumor types, treatment updates, survivorship, symptom management, quality of life, pediatric tumors, late effects, and more. Seating is limited, so don't miss this opportunity to hear the latest information, receive support, and connect with others.
Featured presentations and activities include:
- Keynote speaker, Dr. Howard A. Fine, Neuro Oncology Branch Chief at NCI's Center for Cancer Research and National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke
- Two tracks of specifically tailored presentations for both adult and pediatric patients and their families
- Survivor, patient, and family panel
- Community exhibitors from local organizations
- Breakout sessions on topics including caregiving, nutrition, and more!
- Friday evening reception and performance by inspirational singer/songwriter David M. Bailey

7th Annual MFL Ski Day 2010
Hit the slopes on January 30 to raise funds for brain tumor research in memory of Michael Lewandowski. The event is at Winter Park Resort in Colorado and includes a live auction and raffle. Students Supporting Brain Tumor Research (SSBTR) Walkathon
SSBTR is expanding to have national walk-a-thons! The annual student-run events raise funds for brain tumor research. Since its inception, SSBTR has raised nearly $500,000 for NBTS. Join up for the first event of 2010 in Tucson, AZ on February 20!

Help spread the word. Join us in petitioning the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Board to recommend a Brain Tumor Awareness Stamp to the USPS Postmaster General. Sign the petition and tell your friends and family about the cause!

"No Shave November"
Fundraiser a Success
Dean Boehman of Richmond College participated in "No-Shave November" to raise money and awareness for NBTS in honor of the over 190,000 people diagnosed in the US with a brain tumor each year. Better know as the "Chia Dean", Boehman exceeded his goal and raised $1,892! Check out his weekly photos and story.
