National Brain Tumor Society 2012 Summit
Earlier
this month, the National Brain Tumor Society was honored to host brain
tumor patients, advocates and their families, as well as leaders across
academia, government, industry, and nonprofit at the 2012 Summit.
Comprised of several events over three days, it provided an opportunity
for the brain tumor community to come together, and share the latest in
brain tumor research, celebrate accomplishments, and take action to make
our voices heard. The 2012 Summit included our annual meeting, the
first convening of our state lead advocates, a research symposium, and
the Boston Brain Tumor Walk which rallied over 3,000 participants and
raised more than $500,000 to fund critical brain tumor research. Wow,
what an amazing and inspirational few days!
Here are a few examples of what we heard from the 2012 Summit attendees:
“I’ve learned that National Brain Tumor Society has taken on
two challenges. One is to advance brain cancer research and to really bring new
opportunities to patients. The second is to promote systems biology in medical
research, and cancer research…by being an advocate they are being a leader in
this field…I think it’s inevitable that others will witness that, and try to
model it.”
Thomas Graeber, University of California, Los Angeles 2012 Grant Recipient
“I’m super excited that National Brain Tumor Society had the
vision to try and bring together academic and industrial partners in this. It allows the work that we’re doing to be
translated into real treatments for actual patients.”
Edward Driggers, Agios
Pharmaceuticals 2012 Grant Recipient
“Innovation is far from dead…I’m very optimistic that we
will see some huge changes in the next five to ten years.”
Dr. Anna Barker Transformative Healthcare Networks and Complex Adaptive Systems Initiative, Arizona State University
“It continues to be very satisfying that we are able to
advance cancer systems biology, together, as a major scientific area that holds
enormous potential for new discoveries and translating these (discoveries) to
the clinic….We really applaud National Brain Tumor Society for its innovative
approach to brain tumor research.”
Margaret Foti, American
Association for Cancer Research 2012 Founders Award
Recipient
“I found my way to the National Brain Tumor Society and they
were focusing on advocacy. And, that is how I got involved. They had all the
facts and figures and were ready to go, to support me and communicate with
members of Congress…I was really impressed.”
Clint Murphy, Georgia
State Lead Advocate
“When you think of childhood cancer you think of
leukemia…you don’t think of brain tumors. I want people to be aware that it can
happen to anybody, no matter what their age, race, color or creed.”
Karen Pierce Delaware
State Lead Advocate
