Event History
In 2007, a motivated group of volunteers, along with the Founder of the Kelly Heinz-Grundner Brain Tumor Foundation (KHG), Chris Grundner, took it upon themselves to create the first-ever brain tumor awareness walk in the State of Delaware.
After a year of planning, the first walk took place on May 3, 2008, in the very same location as this year’s walk. Chris was hoping that 500 supporters would show up to participate in the event, but the planning committee had much higher aspirations. In fact, they were convinced more than 1,000 people would come. Well, the planning committee was right! Over 1,800 people showed up for the inaugural event.
The main purpose of the event is to raise awareness for brain tumors and also to bring together patients, survivors, family members, and friends in an inspiring atmosphere of love and support. However, there was also a fundraising aspect and the support from walkers and sponsors generated more than $220,000 for The Kelly Heinz-Grundner Brain Tumor Foundation and its programs.
In 2010, KHG merged with the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS). The funds raised through the Delaware Brain Tumor Walk will support strategic research, public policy advocacy to meet the critical needs of the brain tumor community, and trusted patient information through NBTS.
