Fundraising Honor Roll

Thank you for visiting my personal page.  I created Team Lindy Lou three years ago to participate in the DFW Brain Tumor Walk benefitting NBTS.

I was diagnosed in October of 2009 with an inoperable Grade 4 Glioblastoma (GBM) tumor. When I was diagnosed I had no symptoms, just some horrible migraines that caused me to switch to a new neurologist. I've had migraines since I was young but my new neurologist recommended I have a MRI after my first appointment.  Trust me?I?ve never found anything good about a migraine before, but now when I'm in horrible pain with one I try to remember that it was a migraine and that MRI that could have saved my life! The end of 2009 was a whirlwind of medical treatment with 7 weeks of radiation, IVF treatment before starting my first chemo cycle and Avastin treatment every two weeks. In January 2010, CPT-11 was added to my treatment, but it made me so sick that I was taken off after 4 months.  My tumor responded amazingly well and I was allowed to go off all treatment in February 2011 with regular MRIs for monitoring.  Unfortunately, when I went in for my October 2011 MRI I was told that not only was everything not stable...but I now had a second primary grade 4 tumor in another area of my brain.  Normally when there's a change with your tumor, it's a recurrence (or new cell activity) happening to your original/primary tumor site.  So I headed back in for 5 more weeks of radiation and concurrent daily chemo, then a small break and on to chemo and Avastin treatment every other week.  That's where I am today and I?ve been holding up pretty darn well considering how much poison I've pumped through my body over the past 2+ years.

I feel extremely lucky to be receiving my treatment from a wonderfully positive medical team at Duke (my primary medical team) as well as getting my local treatment from Dr. Elizabeth Maher's compassionate and competent team at UT Southwestern.  I trusted Duke with my care, after much research, as my primary oncologist team because of their positive and caring attitude and their reputation as being the best in this field. Since being diagnosed, I have tried to live with Duke's motto in mind...you need to keep planning to live...not die.  So I got engaged in December 2009 and married in Italy in August 2010. I bought a crazy but sweet thoroughbred named Isadorable and have been taking jumping lessons.  The barn and my adorable Izzy never fail to make me smile...no matter how bad I feel. Everybody needs a horse!

Since the first day of being given this supposed death sentence I have said and I believe it now more than ever...cancer picked the wrong person!  I will fight this battle and win, but this battle will most likely be life-long for me. So even though I am healthy and doing well, I still need your help raising funds for research, new treatments and patient resources because I will most likely need them.

That's why I started Team Lindy Lou and why I need your support.  This disease needs more funding so researchers and scientists can develop new treatments to eliminate brain tumors for good. There are over 100 different types of brain tumors, but there are only about 18,000 adults diagnosed with malignant primary brain tumors in the U.S. each year...that's less than 2% of all diagnosed cancer cases.  That makes brain tumors relatively rare, but unfortunately disproportionately lethal, with 13,000 deaths per year.  Raising funds for treatment and drugs continues to not be a high priority since this is a relatively "low profile" cancer compared to breast cancer, leukemia, etc. I need your help to raise funds and awareness! Please consider joining my team to walk in November or make a donation on my behalf.   In 2009, after being diagnosed and only having 6 weeks to fundraise, Team Lindy Lou was the #1 fundraising team out of the 500+ teams participating.  In 2010, Team Lindy Lou was the #3 fundraising team. Last year Team Lindy was the #1 fundraising team again. Please help me reach my goal!!!!

NBTS is fiercely committed to finding a cure for brain tumors. NBTS aggressively drives strategic research; advocates for public policies that meet the critical needs of the brain tumor community; and provides comprehensive patient, family, and caregiver resources.

Your support ensures this important work will continue.
