Bay Area Brain Tumor Walk

Team Mairbear

I found out I had a brain tumor in December 2012.

I remember sitting on my couch after getting off the phone with my Doctor. It was a Friday night and the sun was setting right behind the Golden Gate bridge - it was magnificent, and although I was in utter shock, I was not crying.

Four months later on April 17th, I went through a Left Frontal Craniotomy Brain Lab Guided Surgical Resection - which really means - brain surgery.

Yes, it was scary.

Yes, it changed my life.

Yes, I am proud to be a 100% tumor-free survivor.

But my story is not why I'm doing this walk. My story is not why I'll always support the National Brain Tumor Society. My story is not the reason why I want you to be involved.

In the months, weeks, days, and hours leading up to my surgery, I was surrounded by love from family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and strangers. I was fortunate enough to have the best neuro-oncologist (shout out to Dr. Cobbs!) and nurse team at CPMC - Davies take care of me. I was lucky to have my Mom and Dad live so close to me and provide a hibernation space at home to recover. I was blessed with a supportive work family who were all more eager to see me recover at my own pace than recover quickly. I am the lucky one.

I am doing this walk to support those who are less fortunate than I was; lives that are actually affected by tumors; whose stories might not have a happy ending; patients who couldn't feel the love every second from their support team; and families that didn't have anyone to hug at the end of the day.

National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) is putting the search for a cure to all brain tumors into overdrive. Progress is being made, but there is so much more to be done. Please support my efforts!

Thanks - Mairin
