The Race for Hope - DC presented by Cassidy Turley raises funds to support innovative research initiatives and provide information for brain tumor patients and their families. This amazing event relies on the dedication and enthusiasm of individuals, families, teams, volunteers, sponsors and donors. Thank you for your support in helping us find a cure for brain tumors!

Who doesn't have headaches? Who doesn't get dizzy or vomit at random times? That's what I think when I look back over the years before my surgeries. These perfectly innocuous symptoms were actually the indicators of an evil lurking in my head- an astrocytoma, a tumor made up of haywire astrocytes (the most common type of brain cell).

During the summer before I turned fourteen, the tumor had gotten so big that it put too much pressure on the surrounding brain tissue. I had an immense headache that ended when I vomited and passed out. Thankfully, my family was visiting the zoo in Washington DC so we were near many excellent hospitals. They were able to get me to a hospital where scans were performed and revealed a large white mass in my brain. I was immediately airlifted to another hospital better equipped to perform brain surgery.  After two emergency surgeries that removed most of the mass, my family waited anxiously for me to wake up. After several weeks, I came around and was thrust into various therapies to restore my faculties. Hospitals do not wait for you to feel ready to begin rehabilitation. Six months later, I was back in high school taking a reduced course load. Since then I have not stopped learning and expanding my brain. Now with a Bachelor's of Art degree in Biochemistry, I hope to help further brain tumor research! This race is a perfect opportunity to support research! I would be glad if you could help me out!

Note that none of my rehabilitation was possible without the perfect timing of Jesus Christ. If He did not orchestrate all the little details of my life, if I was not in Washington DC surrounded by some of the best surgeons at that exact day and time, I would not be here today to share with you!
