In memory of Richard “Chip” Chiappane

March 2, 1963 – November 7, 2013

This May 4th marks the third year that team “Chip Off the Old Block” participates in The Race for Hope DC. But it’s the first time we’ll make the trek without Chip, who passed away last fall. His family, friends, Navy shipmates and co-workers will participate in the 5k run/walk in his memory and with a greater purpose—in support of research initiatives to find a cure for brain tumors.

Chip was diagnosed with an astrocytoma brain tumor in the spring of 2011. The tumors develop from star-shaped glial cells called astrocytes, part of the supportive tissue of the brain. Chip was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, proudly wearing jerseys and flying flags adorned with that big, blue star. How ironic that this lifelong fan of “the Boys” got a star-shaped tumor!

Throughout his illness, Chip continued to live life with zest. He created culinary masterpieces in the kitchen, traveled to Deep Creek Lake with family, attended the Army-Navy game with buddies from the U.S.S. Dewey and spoiled his treasured granddaughter Kyla.

Chip passed away on November 7, 2013. He will be remembered for his irreverent humor, bold story-telling and generous heart. He was truly larger than life. Prior to dying, Chip assured family and friends that when he was gone, he would still be with us. “Just listen to the tweeting birds,” he said to Kyla, “and think of me.”

We are grateful to anyone who can join team “Chip Off the Old Block” on May 4th or donate to the walk. With each step we take, we hope to move one step closer to a cure for brain cancer. And as our feet hit the pavement, our eyes will scan the skies looking for birds accompanying us on the journey.
