On my 43rd birthday in March 2009 I was diagnosed with a meningioma.  Before that day, I'd never even heard of a meningioma (which is a tumor in the lining of the brain) and hardly thought that my visit to the doctor because of a slight tingling in my lip would lead to this type of diagnosis.  Since that time, my husband Scott and I have learned a lot about meningiomas and other types of brain tumors, and unfortunately how common they are.

My tumor was located in a very tricky spot so we needed to find a surgeon who was technically excellent and had a lot of experience.  Scott and I met with a lot of doctors, and ultimately were led to a wonderful surgeon in Seattle who was confident he could perform a successful surgery.  Thankfully, he was right-- I had surgery on September 11, 2009 and returned home a month later tumor-free and on the road to recovery.

As hard as dealing with my diagnosis and surgery was, the experience was a powerful reminder of how lucky I am.  I have a wonderful husband, family and friends, all of whom showed overwhelming support which I'll truly never forget.  I was also incredibly lucky to have a positive outcome.  Sadly, that's not the case for so many people who are diagnosed with brain tumors.

This will be the 10th year that our family has participated in the Race for Hope, but it absolutely has new meaning as I cross the finish line each year as a survivor.  I hope you'll be with us on May 5th, either in person or in spirit.
