The Race for Hope - DC presented by Cassidy Turley raises funds to support innovative research initiatives and provide information for brain tumor patients and their families. This amazing event relies on the dedication and enthusiasm of individuals, families, teams, volunteers, sponsors and donors. Thank you for your support in helping us find a cure for brain tumors!
This is our fouth year participating in memory of our Mother, Luanne. She died in 1989 of a cancerous brain tumor. At the time my sister and I were in high school and it was a very traumatic time. She had a glioblastoma which is a very aggressive form of cancer. After 1 operation and radiation she seems to be getting better but then suddenly took a turn for the worse. She died just 6 days prior to her 40th birthday at our home in Severna Park. I am forever grateful for getting the chance to say goodbye to her.
In 2012 I learned I have an inoperable benign brain tumor. It's an extremely rare pineal region lipoma and I apparently have had it for all of my life. It is mostly asymptomatic but occasionally grows which is when it can cause a lot of havoc for such a little jelly bean. Symptoms can come and go but I do have long lasting side effects such as chronic insomnia and severe migraines. Because of the location, the surgery would be more dangerous then the tumor itself so for now we treat the symptoms but not the tumor. It has been a hard pill to swallow so this year we also walk for me.
Thank you to everyone who donates or chooses to join our team! We are so excited to be doing 3rd year as a team. :)
