Race for Hope - DC

Heading For A Cure

The Race for Hope - DC presented by Cassidy Turley raises funds to support innovative research initiatives and provide information for brain tumor patients and their families. This amazing event relies on the dedication and enthusiasm of individuals, families, teams, volunteers, sponsors and donors. Team Heading For a Cure is participating in the Race for Hope in loving memory of Tommy Broderick and in support of Michael Carroll. Thank you for your support in helping us find a cure for brain tumors!

My dad, Tom Broderick, was fencing again just a few short months after undergoing his first brain surgery.  That?s the kind of guy he was -determined, passionate, and brave- and he wasn't going to let something like brain cancer take the living out of his life. He was (as he always had been) a loving and involved father and husband, a beloved brother and son.  I think back fondly of his sense of humor, his enthusiasm for coaching any and all of our athletic endeavors, and his hilarious tendency to mix metaphors (he was fun to be around, but that was really was just gravy on the cake). It goes without saying that since he lost his battle with cancer in May 2010, I have missed him every single day.  My dad Tom led by example -he was always the picture of calm perseverance in the face of any obstacle, both before and after his diagnosis. Now it's our turn to persevere, to take up the fight in his honor and help create a world that?s free of brain tumors.

Michael was diagnosed at age 28 on Christmas Eve 2010 with a Grade 3 anaplastic mixed oligoastrocytoma.  At the time of diagnosis, he was in the MBA program at the University of Texas-Austin and running a healthcare consulting company. As you can imagine, this diagnosis was devastating to him, his entire family and his large group of close friends.  He underwent two major craniotomies, 7 weeks of radiation and 16 months of chemotherapy. Michael is currently doing great, remains upbeat and has continued to stay strong throughout this journey.  He has been an enormous inspiration to our family.
