Welcome to the BTS (Brain Tumors Suck) team! The Race for Hope - DC raises funds to support innovative research initiatives and provide information for brain tumor patients and their families. I was invited to participate in the race last year from a close family friend and decided to run it this year and put together a team to celebrate my sister, Missy Bennett, and her well-fought battle against brain tumors. When Missy was four years old doctors found a cancerous tumor in her brain. She was admitted to Children’s Hospital where she underwent multiple surgeries and radiation treatment. One might think that this would bring a kid down but not Missy – not my sister…
When Missy had to walk slower than the rest of the kids because surgeries impaired her balance? She just kept the pace. When Missy was told she would need assistance in school due to her disabilities? She graduated high school. I have seen my sister tackle and overcome so many obstacles due to the trauma she has experienced because of her brain tumors. There was never a complaint or a tone of despair during any of her treatments.
In 2009 doctors found another brain tumor and Missy had to go through another surgery to remove it. Doctors believed that this tumor was likely caused by the radiation that she had received at such a young age. This made me think of how important it is for research and awareness to be encouraged in the medical world. Once again my fearless sister looked cancer straight in the eye. She is a true survivor and inspiration for me and all of our friends and family.
This event relies on the dedication and enthusiasm of individuals, families, teams, volunteers, sponsors and donors. Thank you for your support in helping us find a cure for brain tumors!
