Race for Hope - DC

Go Johnny O!

We invite you to join us as we participate in the Race for Hope, 2014. We are called: "Team Go Johnny O."  Here's a summary of Johnny's story, followed by information on how you can participate.

In early 2009, our son Johnny Owen, began experiencing seizures. Shortly after his first birthday, doctors discovered that a tumor was hitchhiking in the left side of his brain.  For nearly 11 months, medicine could not control the seizures, so Dr. Amanda Yaun (Children's National Medical Center, Washington DC.), evicted the tumor.

Johnny O awoke from surgery uttering his favorite phrase, "I was born in Honolulu."  His seizures ceased immediately, tests said that the tumor was benign, and two days later (just before Thanksgiving 2009) Johnny departed the hospital via red wagon.  Johnny's healing continued, doctors weaned away all medication, and MRI scans showed no new tumor regeneration.

To celebrate his quick recovery, Johnny O and friends walked in the 2010 Race for Hope, in Washington DC.  Johnny's blonde hair and bright yellow, "tumor survivor," t-shirt left a joyfully strong impression onmany people.

In May of 2014, we will celebrate more than four years of seizure-free, medicine-free, and tumor-free life as Johnny O runs for the second time.

Everyone is invited!  Please consider participating via one or more of the following ways:

1.  Race alongside Johnny O for the 5k event and donate to our team (100% of funds go directly to the National Brain Tumor Society). There are many other children and adults who hope for relief from their tumor related illness. We want to support them.

2.  Donate to the Children's National Medical Center, Washington DC. Their research, programs, and doctors have done amazing things for Johnny O.

3.  Donate time or money to another cause between now and May of 2014. Each of you know about pressing needs in your community, or among your friends and neighbors. Please consider sharing with them in honor of Team Go Johnny O.

Sincerely,
John & Monika Nordlander

P.S.  The Race for Hope - DC presented by Cassidy Turley, raises funds to support innovative research initiatives and provide information for brain tumor patients and their families.
