Rodney's Beautiful Day Groupies

Rodney's Beautiful Day Groupies is a team made up of the family and friends of Rodney Maze and Noah, Samantha and Jill Maze.  This is the 9th year for our team and we are excited to participate in the Race for Hope once again. Over the past eight years, Rodney's Beautiful Day Groupies has raised over $38,000 for brain cancer research. This year we hope to raise another $5,000 in honor of Rodney.

In April of 2006, Rodney was diagnosed with gliomatosis cerebri, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.  At that time, Rodney and Jill were the proud parents of Noah, who was 3 years old, and Jill was 7 months pregnant with their daughter, Samantha.  The diagnosis was devastating and unfortunately, surgery was not an option, due to the diffuse nature of the tumor.  After consulting with several brain tumor experts at various hospitals and universities, Rodney began radiation treatment at Inova Fairfax Hospital, under the guidance of the Brain Tumor Center at Duke University.

During radiation, Rodney battled several major medical setbacks. On Sunday, May 21, 2006, Rodney lost his battle with brain cancer. Samantha was born 6 weeks later in July.

Noah and Samantha take comfort in the fact that their dad is always watching over them.  Noah is now an active 14 year-old who loves hockey and is on the ice nearly all year long as a center for the Ashburn Xtreme Hockey Club.  He also loves running and plans to finish this year's Race in record time.  Noah is looking forward to high school and has an interest in sports journalism.  Samantha is now a cheerful 10 year-old who loves gymnastics (her favorite events are vault and beam), lacrosse, swimming, reading mystery books, and family movie night.  She is looking forward to middle school, but more importantly, a summer vacation to the beach!

We are inspired to carry on Rodney's legacy through our support of the Race for Hope.  Rodney was an amazing man, having survived childhood leukemia against all odds.  Motivated by his experiences, Rodney became an accomplished scientist and lawyer.  Rodney received his PhD in Medical and Molecular Genetics from the Indiana University School of Medicine and many of his research articles were published in medical journals.  Later, Rodney received his JD from the Indiana University School of Law and he began a career which combined his scientific background and his interest in the law.  At the time of his diagnosis, Rodney was working as a lawyer at the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C.

Growing up in the Hoosier state and attending IU, Rodney was a big fan of IU basketball-- go Big Red!  Rodney also loved the band, U2.  As he was such a huge fan of U2, and one of his favorite songs was "Beautiful Day" we thought the name, Rodney's Beautiful Day Groupies, was fitting for our team.

On Sunday May 7, 2017, we will be running and walking through Washington, D.C. to raise funds for brain cancer research in Rodney's name and we would love to have your support!  Please consider joining our team or making a donation to this worthy cause.  We would be honored to have you as one of Rodney's Groupies.  Thank you so much!

It will be a Beautiful Day when we find a cure for brain cancer.

Love,  Jill, Noah and Samantha Maze
