Dr. Mike's Blueshirts
For the seventh year, Dr. Mike's Blueshirts will run in memory of my husband, Michael McKenna. Mike was 30 years old when he was first diagnosed with a PNET in his left frontal lobe. Our daughter, Lindsey, was less than a year old, and he was less than one month into his fellowship to become an oncologist. He bravely underwent surgery, radiation and chemo to have his tumor reoccur a year later. More surgery, chemo, radiation, and a stem cell transplant followed. He enjoyed 5 cancer free years before it came back, angrier than ever before in the form of a glioblastoma. In those five years, Mike became the oncologist he dreamed of being, the father he aspired to be, and the greatest husband a girl could dream of. Mike loved with his whole heart and soul. He loved his daughter, his family, his job, his Stonehouse guys, his music, and his New York Rangers with a fierce passion. Mike did nothing half way. In his memory, the Blueshirts will gather again, and know he is there with us sharing a beer, whining about the NHL season, shaking his head because he can't understand why we would ever run if we weren't chased, and playing a song on his guitar as we remember him.
