About the National Brain Tumor Society:

National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for people living with a brain tumor today and anyone who will be diagnosed tomorrow. This means effecting change in the system at all levels.

Ken's cancer story started in December 2012, when he had an MRI after having symptoms including headaches, visual changes, and impaired balance. The MRI showed a growth in the third ventricle of his brain. He underwent emergency brain surgery to place a shunt to alleviate pressure within his skull and take a biopsy of the tumor.
Ken was diagnosed with an anaplastic astrocytoma, which in an aggressive, malignant tumor that is difficult to remove surgically due to tentacle-like projections that grow into surrounding tissue.
He underwent 6 weeks of radiation starting in March 2013. A second shunt was placed in May 2013 due to continued increased intercranial pressure. After the second surgery, Ken developed short term memory loss from the trauma of surgery and swelling. To further shrink the tumor, Ken has been prescribed Temodar, an oral chemotherapy treatment designed to treat aggressive tumors. Ken has slowly regained his memory over the last few months and returned to work in January 2014.
His last MRI showed much improvement. The tumor is no longer showing up on the MRI. Currently, the plan is to continue monthly chemotherapy treatments until July 2014. Ken will undergo MRIs every 3 months to check progress.
The support of family, friends, and skilled doctors has made it possible to make it through the past year and a half. We hope that by sharing Ken's story, we increase awareness of brain tumors, and by your donation, find better treatments, and ultimately a cure.
