Race for Hope - DC

Hoya Lawyas for Hope

The Hoya Lawyas for Hope (both the loyal veterans and the fresh-faced newcomers) will be running our eighth Race for Hope DC to raise funds for brain tumor research and patient support. As a team, we've come in first place and last place, we've run through heat, cold and rain, with numbers ranging from 5 to 45, with matching shirts (and, at times, head and wrist bands) and not-so-matching shirts, during finals and during our first years as lawyers, and with both happy and sad tears in our eyes. We've raised well over $75,000 (I'm just guessing, but that's probably true) and we can double that number this year (remember, donations are tax-deductible)!

The team was formed in 2007 in honor of Barry Recht, who was battling a rare chordoma brain tumor at the time. The original 5 Hoya Lawyas for Hope showed up on race morning, in the middle of 1L finals, with limber legs and matching headbands/wristbands. By the second annual showing of the Hoya Lawyas for Hope, we were running in memory of Barry and in honor of the sadly growing number of friends and family being diagnosed with brain tumors, but we were running with a much bigger team and with a renewed determination. Every year we've recruited new team members, new partners in the fight against brain tumors. This year's Hoya Lawyas for Hope will no longer be a tiny group of law students, but will be a random sprinkling of lawyers, students, professionals, unprofessionals, runners, walkers, drinkers, people affected by brain tumors and people affected by our team captains' annoying and unrelenting emails, posts, texts, tweets, calls, etc.

Let's raise a bunch of money, get some tax deductions, run/walk/hobble 3.1 miles and chow down on some bagels, donuts, coffee and mimosas on Sunday, May 4, 2014. If you can't be there, please support us with a donation or join the team as a Virtual Runner and run with us in spirit.

We are running in memory and in honor of the following amazing, courageous cancer battlers:

In Memory Of:
Barry Recht
Bob Magee
Rita Shah
Donna Mae Gaydos
Aubrey Anne Bonnichsen

Bill Estep

Mark Carl Slavcoff

Robbie Oberly

In Honor Of:

The list grows each year (please let me know if you have any additions this year) and we have to work that much harder to raise awareness and money for the cause. Join us in the fight!
