2010 Annual Meeting
On September 21, the brain tumor community came together at NBTS's 2010 Annual Meeting, held this year at the Mission Bay Conference Center at UCSF in San Francisco. More than 200 people celebrated accomplishments, honored dedicated members of the community, and learned about the latest research being done to eradicate this terrible disease. At the meeting, NBTS announced the new Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the coming year. Jeff Kolodin will serve as Chair, Cord Scholbohm, DMD as Vice-Chair, Ken Grey will continue in the role of Treasurer, and Francesca Venezia Dunbar takes over as Secretary. Additionally, Scott Memmott, Esq., has joined the Board as a new member. We are extremely grateful for the leadership that Allison Jones Thomson has provided for the past two years, and thank her for her past work as Board Chair.

Research
Neurological surgeon is encouraged by vaccine trial to battle brain tumors
Andrew T. Parsa, MD, PhD, of the University of California, San Francisco, whose research has been supported by NBTS, is encouraged by early and preliminary results from his study to evaluate overall survival in patients taking part in a project that offers a "vaccine" to battle brain tumors. New clinical phase III-study for anaplastic astrocytoma starts in the US
Antisense Pharma recently announced the SAPPHIRE Phase III study for patients diagnosed with refractory or recurrent anaplastic astrocytoma only. The study will assess the efficacy, safety, and effect on quality of life of trabedersen (AP 12009) in these patients, compared with standard chemotherapies. Read more.

Meningioma Awareness Day in Boston, Mass.
The Brain Science Foundation, in collaboration with the Hahnemann Hospital Foundation, Brigham & Women's Hospital, and the Daniel E. Ponton Fund for the Neurosciences, is pleased to present Meningioma Awareness Day 2010: Empowerment Starts Here on Saturday, October 2. Harriet Patterson, Director of Patient Services, will be speaking at a session titled "The Impact of Healthcare Reform on Brain Tumor and Patient Care." Learn more.

Update on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
September 23, 2010, marks six months since the Congress enacted and President Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The law will not be fully implemented until 2014, but important provisions of the Affordable Care Act are effective beginning September 23, 2010, including some that offer important protections to those with brain tumors. President Proclaims September as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
On September 10, President Obama proclaimed September as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and encouraged Americans to join him in "recognizing and reaffirming our commitment to fighting childhood cancer." Read the full proclamation.

Telford receives Athlete of the Month honor
Congratulations to BethAnn Telford, who has raised hundreds of thousands of dolllars for NBTS, as she was recently named the USA Triathalon Rudy Project Amateur Multisport Athlete of the Month. Read her entire nomination.

"Jog for Jackie" raises over $7,000 for NBTS
"Jog for Jackie" was held on Saturday, June 26, in honor of the late Jacqueline Hoobler Ruestman who sadly passed away on June 17, 2008, after battling a brain tumor for five years. Although the race took place in the small town of El Paso, Illinois, the generousity of the residents living there was tremendous. "Jog for Jackie" raised over $7,000 for NBTS.
